FMD 6 is a handheld wood moisture meter for accurate measurement of the moisture content of paper, wood and building materials. The moisture meter features preset characteristic curves for material-specific moisture measurement. To detect moisture, the moisture meter requires external sensors (sold separately – see accessories) that can either be inserted into a material or placed on a material’s surface, allowing for either destructive or non-destructive measurement.

The FMD 6 moisture meter is the ideal tool for monitoring the moisture content of paper, wood and building materials such as concrete, pavement, cement, gypsum and mortar. The FMC Wood Moisture Meter can accurately measure absolute humidity in diverse building materials. To detect humidity, the FMC Wood Moisture Meter has a connection for external sensors which can either be inserted into the building material or placed on it. To take into account:
Measuring values will be higher in chips or knots. On the contrary, if measurements are taken on breaks, the humidity value will be lower in relation to the real humidity value (absolute humidity).
In both cases, you should measure near the area that is going to be measured and use the mean value.
Measurement accuracy:
Due to the inhomogeneous composition of wood, oscillations in gross density can appear while measuring the same wood type so you will have to take diverse humidity measurements. The overall result will be the mean value calculated by the detector.

To take into account:
While measuring moisture content in wood, the result will be more accurate on smooth surfaces. The measuring value will grow on chips or knots. If measurements are taken on breaks, the humidity value will be lower in relation to the real humidity value (absolute humidity).
In both cases, you will have to measure near the area which is going to be measured.
Measurement accuracy:

For industrial continuous production of wood pellets, chips, sawdust and similar materials, in-line moisture measurement for monitoring and controlling the mixing process is important. Consistent quality of every batch, reduction of the consumption of wood, and shortest possible mixing times are the criteria which are important in wood product production. Sensors of PCE Instruments help meet those criteria through highly accurate moisture measurement.

The production of wood products is subject to, e.g. large fluctuations caused by varying moisture contents of the raw and auxiliary materials (sands, aggregates). A reduction of these moisture fluctuations during storage is possible, but not easy to implement. Therefore, it makes more sense to do continuous online / inline moisture measurement during the mixing process to determine the respective component humidities or moisture. Subsequently, the dosage of water is controlled. This procedure not only allows the equalization of the quality of each batch but also reduces the mixing time.

PCE Instruments planar sensors are at a suitable point in the ground or screwed in the wall of the mixer (e.g.pan mixer, screw mixer). It can also be used when other variants or types are used, e.g. for in-line moisture measurement of additives (hopper for sand).

In the industrial production of wood pulp boards (PB, MDF, OSB) or pellets, the on-line measurement of the moisture/density of the wood material is essential to ensure that the processes in production run as efficiently as possible, energy consumption is kept low, and the raw material losses are minimized.

The use of a microwave moisture meter, as opposed to a humidity sensor, provides a very consistent and high product quality while reducing operating and maintenance costs. When connected to a controller or a process control system, the operator has the opportunity to interact with the measurement results in real time. This means less downtime, for example in pressing or drying processes the loss of material is reduced. The payback period of the microwave moisture sensor for pellets and wood pulp is therefore very small, only a few weeks.

In the online moisture measurement in production processes, the microwave sensor is valuable in many process stages: in the refining of wood pulp, during resin treatment, during pressing/dewatering and during the final drying. When used for measuring the moisture content of sawdust or larger wood chips, the microwave sensor provides exceptionally accurate measured values if the wood pulp is homogeneous, well mixed, and pre-dried to avoid “moisture nests” in the wood pulp mixture.

The more accurate the on-line moisture measurement of the wood pulp and the moisture control, the smoother the end product (MDF, OSB boards) produced from it later on. In addition, the drying process (dryer control) itself is very costly. Thus, there is the greatest savings potential in this area. Too much drying may lead to not only a waste of energy, but deterioration in the quality of the fiber material.

Areas of application for the PCE-MWM 300P microwave sensor include fiberboard (PB, MDF, OSB), sawdust, wood shavings, wood lamellae, wood panels, wood pellets and wood chips (incineration). The use of a microwave moisture meter can also be used to effectively control the feed rate when burning wood pellets in industrial furnaces or firing systems.

The wood moisture meter PCE-MA 50X is an innovative solution for the fast and highly accurate determination of moisture in a wide variety of materials. The measuring principle does not require the generation of a characteristic curve and the wood moisture meter is immediately ready for use after assembly.

Based on the well-known and recognized Darr sample, the wood moisture meter uses weighing technology from the range of analytical balances, which enables resolution in 0.1 mg increments (0.0001 g). This also corresponds to a moisture resolution of 0.0001%. In this case, a very high measurement accuracy can be achieved with a measurement uncertainty of only 0.0001% moisture.

In addition to the high measuring accuracy, the wood moisture meter offers further advantages. The opening and closing of the sample chamber takes place on the wood moisture meter without contact and is fully automatic. This reduces measurement errors and ensures hygienic, comfortable and safe work. The graphical 5″ color touch display allows intuitive use in different languages. The wood moisture meter has several databases in which users, products, customers, drying parameters and up to 5,000 drying analyzes can be stored. A detailed documentation of the material samples is thus created quickly and easily. The adaptation of the drying processes can be adapted individually to the requirements of the different materials.
